Traverse City

Welcome to Traverse City

Traverse City is the ‘Big City by the Bay' with a distinctly mountain-town vibe right here in beautiful Northern Michigan. It is the seat of Grand Traverse County and is the largest city in the 21-county Northern Michigan region. Traverse City is well-known for being the Cherry Capital of the world and is host to the National Cherry Festival each July. The Traverse City Film Festival has put the area on the map with east and west-coast visitors and has turned into a true tourist hotspot for food, wine, and entertainment.

Traverse City has many desirable neighborhoods, including the downtown district which experienced a revival of sorts in the early 2000s. Both historic and new buildings are home to boutique stores and restaurants, as well as luxury apartments, condominiums, and hotels. Stately vintage homes grace nearby blocks adding variety and charm to the downtown district.

The Boardman River meanders through town towards Boardman Lake, offering a beautiful recreational component to the City. The TART Trails (Traverse Area Recreation and Transportation Trails) spiral out of downtown towards Leelanau County, Williamsburg, Kingsley, and into the base of Old Mission Peninsula.

Important health, civic, and educational facilities are located in Traverse City, which continues to draw people to the area. Traverse City Area Public School (TCAPS) offers public education options throughout the city and for all ages. For higher education, Northwestern Michigan College is a publicly funded community college offering a variety of associate and bachelor’s degrees, as well as graduate and doctoral degrees through partner universities. The Dennos Museum Center features world-class exhibits and shows while providing local support for music, dance, and the arts. Munson Medical Center is in town and is the hub for Northern Michigan’s largest healthcare system.
