Just off the usual beaten path, Northport is a charming harbor town near the tip of the Peninsula. Freshwater views are always nearby, including easterly sunrise vistas over Grand Traverse Bay and westerly sunset skies over North Manitou. The drive to Northport is an absolute delight of the pastoral countryside - some of the County’s best farmland is found here in northern Leelanau. Cherries, apples, and grapes grow easily here, where the land is elevated and where the weather is tempered by Lake Michigan - truly a farmer’s paradise!
 
Outdoor enthusiasts have much to appreciate here. The Grand Traverse Lighthouse at Leelanau State Park is a spectacular escape for visitors and locals alike. With over 1500 acres of protected forests and shoreline, there is much to explore while visiting overnight or on a quick day trip. Boardwalk trails along Kehl Lake are a bird-lovers paradise and a must-do for any naturalist!
 
The Village of Northport is host to many excellent restaurants and shops and is bustling with energy year-round. Summertime events and activities include the wildly popular Leelanau Uncaged, Music in the Park, and golf at Northport Creek, among many others. Wintertime events are well-loved by locals and include Holiday Tree Lighting in December, community wall climbing at Northport Public School, and sledding/skiing/skating at Braman Hill Recreation Area.
 
Beyond the Village, other long-standing niche communities are tucked along the Lake Michigan shoreline along the tip of the Peninsula.
 
  • Northport Point - an exclusive gated homeowners association; host to a private golf course, tennis courts, and another summer programming. 
  • Cherry Home Shores - a recreational residential community with common amenities, waterfront parks, playgrounds, and recreational trails for use by community members.
 
Cathead Bay - is not a homeowners association or gated community; rather a spectacular and remote area of shoreline residences on beautiful Cathead Bay. This diverse landscape ranges from mature coastal hardwoods to low sandy dunes reminiscent of southern California. Flanked on almost three sides by State Park, this area is as private as it gets!
