Leland

Welcome to Leland

Leland, Michigan is the jewel of northern Leelanau County. Located on a narrow strip of land between Lake Michigan and Lake Leelanau, this delightful little fishing village has charmed visitors and locals alike for generations. Rich in history and natural beauty, Leland is best known for its world-class beaches, incredible Lake Michigan vistas, crystal clear waters, and numerous preserved natural areas with hiking trails for all ages and interests.

Leland Harbor is a Federal Harbor of Refuge and is a frequent stop for casual yachters and serious sailors exploring the Lake Michigan shoreline. It is home to the Mishe-Mokwa and Manitou Island Transit, which provides ferry service to the Manitou Islands (part of the Sleeping Bear Dunes National Park). Historical Fishtown sits comfortably in this harbor, at the mouth of the Leland River, and is a picturesque in-town destination for shopping, fishing, dining, and more. Depending on the season, visitors can watch salmon jump the Leland Dam, taste the flavors of Leelanau’s best food and wine at the Leland Wine Fest, or cheer on participants of the “Mac” as they move through the Manitou Passage!

For those who prefer swimming and boating in the warmth of the inland lakes, Leland is the northernmost gateway to North and South Lake Leelanau. With more than 40 miles of shoreline, these two lakes reach 21 miles into the heart of Leelanau County - an unparalleled waterway for sailing, swimming, fishing, and cruising! Leland Yacht Club and Leland Country Club overlook the north lake and are in-town amenities that have been a part of the Leland lifestyle for decades.

While Leland is commonly thought of as a summertime destination, there’s no question that Leland is also a great place to live year-round. The Leelanau Children’s Center and the Leland Public School are both located in the village; the Children’s Center is a Michigan Department of Education Great Start to Quality, five-star rated early childhood education program and Leland School is a K-12 International Baccalaureate School regarded by many as one of the premier schools in the area. In addition to offering excellent childhood education, Leland is a hub for cultural events and entertainment. The Old Art Building frequently offers adult and childhood programming throughout the year, while the Leland Library and Historical Society provide enriching entertainment for all of Leland’s year-round residents!
