Empire

Welcome to Empire

Empire is a charming coastal village on Lake Michigan, located in southwestern Leelanau and near Benzie County. This delightful sleepy town is famous for its proximity to the Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore and is home to its headquarters, the Philip A. Hart Visitor Center. Formerly a lumber town, Empire is now a desirable visitor destination with unparalleled views of the dunes, North Manitou and South Manitou islands, and Lake Michigan. Public access to the Lake Michigan shoreline can be found in the town at Empire Beach, while South Bar Lake is steps away and is enjoyed by swimmers and fishermen alike. Located just south of the village, the Empire Bluff Trail is popular for its striking vistas and is one of the most photographed areas in the County. In the fall, the Empire Hill Climb automotive race thrills race-car aficionados with a drag race to the trailhead at the top of Wilco Road.

New housing developments in and around Empire are slowly growing this lakeside destination into a more robust and more populous community. The Village at M22 and The New Neighborhood are both steps from the shore and offer new construction and in-town living at their best.
